"The Powerpuff Girls" is the latest kid-friendly series that's set for a reboot, as Cartoon Network announced that the show will return to airwaves will all-new episodes in 2016.
"Powerpuff Girls," about a pint-sized trio of young superheroines out to save the world, was created back in 1998, and ran on CN for 78 episodes. The popular series won two Emmys during its run, and recently came back for a computer-generated, reimagined standalone feature, "The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed," which aired on Cartoon Network in January.
"The original 'Powerpuff Girls' was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide," said Rob Sorcher, Cartoon Network's chief content officer, in a statement announcing the news. "We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X."
It was no doubt the warm reaction to "Dance Pantsed" that paved the way for "Powerpuff"'s return, though as The A.V. Club notes, the creator and writer of the original series, Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust, respectively, were not involved in that project, and most likely won't be back for the series, either. But the site also said that original voice actors Tara Strong (Bubbles), Elizabeth Daily (Buttercup), and Cathy Cavadini (Blossom), did reprise their roles for "Dance Pantsed," and are a safe -- though unconfirmed -- bet for "Powerpuff" 2.0.
"As the original ambassador of 'girl power,' The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation," said Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America at Cartoon Network Enterprises.
The new "Powerpuff Girls" joins "Reading Rainbow" and "The Magic School Bus," two other long-gone, beloved series getting the reboot treatment.
