Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch Will Be Wreaking All Kinds of Havoc in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Entertainment Weekly has some major scoop about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, the twin mutant characters set to appear in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," including a big revelation from director Joss Whedon: They're working for the titular bad guy.



"They're on Team Ultron, which makes things really hard for the Avengers because all of sudden they're dealing with powers that they're not used to," Whedon told EW of the duo played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. "With the [first] 'Avengers,' everybody pretty much had the power of being able to punch somebody. And now we have a woman who can get inside your head and move objects, and a boy that can move faster than anything, and a robot [Ultron] who can self-replicate and is out of his mind. So all of sudden, it's a darker, weirder, tougher world that [the Avengers are] living in."



Whedon also explained that the siblings have a major chip on their shoulders going back to the loss of their parents, and a serious ax to grind with the Avengers in particular -- "Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver hate them with a fiery hate," he said -- though, of course, he didn't reveal why. But that plays out throughout the film, the director said, and their anger is explored through the lens of their origins as orphans ostracized in eastern Europe, which Taylor-Johnson says leads them to have a careless attitude when it comes to the future of the planet.



Olsen took her experience as a sibling of twins -- her older sisters are former "Full House" stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen -- into account when working out her character, noting that twins "always balance each other out," a notion with which Taylor-Johnson agrees.



"They're very yin-and-yang in that twin sense," the actor said. "In his power, he's physical and she's psychological. ... He's like the father figure and she's like the mother figure. Emotionally, she can stabilize him, and he protects her physically, vice-versa. So they have this beautiful connection and it's kind of them against the world."
