"Two and a Half Men" is planning a controversial storyline for its final season that seems partly inspired by an Adam Sandler comedy.
According to CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler, the long-running sitcom will focus on an adoption during its 12th season that will bring Ashton Kutcher and Job Cryer's characters, Walden and Alan, together as a gay couple -- sort of. Tassler revealed during an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour Thursday that Walden will endure a major health scare, resulting in an "existential crisis" that leads him to yearn for "more meaning in his life."
His solution? Adopting a child, though the single ladies' man realizes the process is a difficult one for solo straight parents.
"So, once and for all, he decides he's going to propose to Alan -- they're going to adopt a child as a 'gay' couple," Tassler told reporters.
If that scenario sounds familiar, it's because it's similar to the one from "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," the 2007 flick in which straight single guys Adam Sandler and Kevin James get married in order to receive domestic partner benefits. Some reporters in the room wondered if "Men" going a similar route might be offensive to the LGBT community, though Tassler didn't seem concerned.
"I think it's a very positive statement [to say] 'I am going to adopt a child as a gay couple,'" she said. "The reality is he can do that. And at one point you couldn't do that, and now you can do that, so I think that's a much more positive statement."
Whether or not audiences will agree with "Men"'s handling of the storyline is another matter. Viewers will be able to judge for themselves when the final season of "Two and a Half Men" premieres on October 30.
