The British actress is a relative newcomer to the industry, but had a recent role in "24: Live Another Day." Her casting follows that of fellow newbies Crystal Clarke and Pip Anderson, who joined the ensemble earlier this month.
Chong's casting was first announced by Latino Review, which noted that nothing is known at this time about exactly what part the actress will play. Variety reports that it's a small role.
Production will wrap for a short break in August to accommodate actor Harrison Ford, who broke his leg on set in an accident involving the Millennium Falcon. Shooting is expected to remain on track for the film's planned release date.
"Star Wars: Episode VII" is due in theaters on December 18, 2015.
