Benedict Cumberbatch Is Khan -- Shere Khan, in 'Jungle Book: Origins'

The Duke Of Cambridge Celebrates The Royal MarsdenWell, maybe Benedict Cumberbatch can recycle his dressing room nameplate from "Star Trek Into Darkness." The actor, who played Khan in the sci-fi flick, is set to play another Khan -- Shere Khan in Warner Bros.' live-action adaptation of "Jungle Book: Origins."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cumberbatch will voice the man-eating tiger that is young Mowgli's nemesis. Based on Rudyard Kipling's stories, the movie follows the orphaned Mowgli as he's raised by wolves, befriends Baloo the bear and Bagheer the black panther. It will be the directorial debut of Andy Serkis (you know, the guy who played Gollum in "Lord of the Rings" and Caesar in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes").

Cumberbatch and Serkis both did motion capture and voice work on Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" movies, as dragon Smaug and and Gollum respectively.

Cumberbatch will have some Shere Khan competition, as Disney is making a competing "Jungle Book" movie. Idris Elba voices Shere Khan in that film.

Warner Bros. "Jungle Book: Origins" is set to hit theaters Oct. 21, 2016.
