"Grimm" is about to return for its 4th Season, and if you watch the beloved fantasy series you're probably chomping at the bit to find out what's gonna go down after a very intense, drama-filled Season 3 finale.
Moviefone had the chance to chat with one of the show's stars, Bitsie Tulloch, who plays veterinarian Juliette Silverton, girlfriend to detective and "Grimm" Nick Burkhardt. Bitsie opened up about a "darker" Season 4 (there will be uber-scary new wesen creatures...), the future of Nick and Juliette, and what it will be like now that Nick has (gasp!) lost his supernatural powers.
Oh, she also compared her character to Willow (Alyson Hannigan) in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," which made us love her even more.
Moviefone: Fans are eagerly awaiting new "Grimm" after last season's crazy finale. What can you reveal about Season 4?
Bitsie Tulloch: Well, there were 8,000 cliffhangers in the season finale for 3. We're basically picking up exactly where we left of, so Nick realizes that he's lost his Grimm powers and there's the fallout of that, there's the fallout of Monroe and Rosalee's wedding being ruined, and of course, Juliette realizing that Nick had sex with Adalind. So, we're not really sure if the relationship can withstand something that serious.
How will things be different for them now that Nick isn't a Grimm?
As far as Nick and Juliette's relationship is concerned, it's kind of a good thing. One of the reasons they're constantly being tried and tested is stuff keeps happening that he no control over, such as Adalind morphing into Juliette. And he didn't know any better, so it's really not his fault. But for her, she's just sort of thinking, well, I don't have to be in this relationship and it's too chaotic. She's really trying to decide whether or not it's even worth it anymore. So, in a sense, as dramatic as that discovery was about Adalind, it's slightly tempered by the fact that he's lost his powers. They're both thinking, hey, I know this is bad that you've lost your powers and it's not necessarily the best thing, but it might be the best thing for our relationship. So it's going to come down to prioritizing his lineage and what his responsibility is to people or whether or not he really wants to save the relationship. It's gonna be up to the two of them.
There's a part of me that that thinks Juliette likes his powers on some level just because of the fun she had helping out. Do you feel that way or do you think she has more of a practical approach to their relationship?
In Season 3, once she was sort of integrated into the Scooby Squad so to speak, she's been having a blast. I love that they've been playing around with her being a little bit brainy and slightly awkward and she really gets into the research. She's actually having a really good time. She's also just happy that he's finally including her with this information, so she's used to it and she likes it until something happens like Adalind morphs into Juliette and has sex with her boyfriend...
It's kind of a deal breaker.
Yeah, that's kind of a deal breaker. It's kind of like one chaotic thing too many.
Will the season premiere resolve some of these major cliffhangers?
The season premiere will resolve a couple of the cliffhangers, but a few of them will not be immediately resolved.
How will Nick not having powers change the landscape of the show?
The thing with having the Trubel character is, so Nick lost his powers, but she's around right now. So she's gonna have to step it up and kind of take over fighting the danger while he's out of commission.
So it's safe to say we'll get a good amount of Trubel this season?
She's definitely in the first episode. She's coming back.
Will we see Adalind this season?
Yeah, Adalind's still around wreaking havoc. She never goes away unfortunately for Juliette. I'm dying to see a cat fight between the two of them.
What would be really fun would be a cat fight with you against her as a morphed version of you. That would be quite the acting job for you, like a "Parent Trap" situation.
That's actually a really great idea. I'm having dinner with the showrunners later. Maybe I'll totally pitch that and give you credit.
Juliette's been through so much over the past few seasons. Are we going to see even more crazy things happen to her this season?
Crazy. I can't give it away but there are major, major plot points about stuff she's going to go through in Season 4 that the fans will lose their minds over. When I first read the script I thought it was almost a joke and just realized, that is genius and I can't believe we haven't done that yet.
Last season you got to get more involved in Nick's world. Will we see more of that side of Juliette?
I think she's just sort of coming into her own and realizing she really has something to contribute. You know, she has a medical background. She's a veterinarian so she knows a lot about chemistry, for example. When they started doing these scenes for Juliette, and I've had a few where she's doing research and she's getting so excited and almost breathless talking about all the research she's done, I always thought about, because I was a huge fan of Buffy, I always thought about Alyson Hannigan in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." I love that stuff. So I think she's really into it. She likes being helpful. As soon as I got the first scene where she was doing that I immediately thought of that and now I always thinking of it as paying homage to Alyson Hannigan in "Buffy."
Do you think that Juliette and Nick are ever going to have a normal relationship? Is that something you want for her?
That's a really good question. This being a TV show, do I ever think that it's going to be normal status quo peaceful? No. Would that be nice? Sure. Is that going to happen? Absolutely not.
I just saw some character posters with some pretty creepy creatures we'll be seeing this season. What can we expect on that front?
Brie and I were shooting a scene last night at midnight with some wesen creatures and it took us probably three takes. We weren't supposed to be scared. We were supposed to be tough and kind of badass and we were screaming and it took us a while to get our sh-t together. And it was legitimately scary, so they're kind of going there. It's going to be darker. We even hired a new DP to alternate with the other ones and he lights it a lot darker and it's going to be a little bit creepier. Monroe and Rosalee have so far had a pretty blissful go of it and they're gonna be tried. They'll be some pretty serious stuff and there's some heavy stuff going forward that raises interesting questions.
I did just see something about killing off a major character in Season 4.
There will be shockers. I can't speak to whether or not somebody is going to killed off.
