Neil Patrick Harris to Headline His Own Variety Show on NBC

neil patrick harris variety showAfter dropping several hints over the years about his desire to host a variety show, Neil Patrick Harris may have landed his dream gig.

Vulture reports that NPH is in final negotiations to headline a U.S. version of long-running U.K. variety series "Saturday Night Takeaway," the rights to which NBC has reportedly just retained. Per Vulture:

We hear multiple broadcast networks actively bid for the rights to land the Harris-hosted series, with ITV asking networks to agree to an on-the air, ten-episode order for the project. In addition, two sources tell us ITV was asking for a price tag north of $2.5 million for each hourlong episode (and that's before the substantial marketing and promotion such a project demands). The Harris show is also expected to originate from New York.

That's great news for both Harris and viewers, since the showman has already charmed audiences with sitcom gigs ("How I Met Your Mother"), high-profile movie roles (current Oscar bait flick "Gone Girl"), and Tony-winning musical chops ("Hedwig and the Angry Inch"), not to mention being Hollywood's go-to awards show host (the Tonys, the Emmys, and now the 2015 Oscars). A variety show is a natural progression for the star, and a longtime bucket list item for the entertainer.

No word yet on just when the show is set to debut, or if it will retain the name, since NBC already has "Saturday Night Live" taking up that night's programming. Perhaps it will run on the same night, but before "SNL"? Stay tuned to find out.
