Could There Be More 'Hunger Games' Films After 'Mockingjay - Part 2'?

Hunger Games Mockingjay

"Hunger Games" fans are no doubt both anticipating and dreading the final film in the series, as the release of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" in November 2015 will signal the end of Katniss Everdeen's big screen adventures. But what if there were more movies about Panem?

In an interview with Empire magazine promoting "Mockingjay - Part 1," director Francis Lawrence mused on that subject, noting that additional films from the "Hunger Games" universe may be possible. Likening it to J.K. Rowling's upcoming "Harry Potter" spin-off "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," the director said it would be conceivable to make more films featuring Panem -- but it would also be difficult, for a number of reasons.

"It's a tough thing. It's a weird thing," Lawrence told Empire. "That world of Harry Potter, there's a lot to that world that you can explain. You can understand the appeal of telling another story, but can you actually do it without Harry, Hermione and those characters? Will people care as much? And I guess you can say the same thing about the Hunger Games world. There are a lot of past games and a lot of this world, but without Katniss, is it the same? Part of what I like about the series is the connection to things we think about and talk about now. What's the new version of that? That would be the tricky thing."

"Fantastic Beats" is still a ways off -- it's slated for a November 2016 release -- so it will be a while before we'll know just how successful it will be. The easy answer to Lawrence's query would be for Lionsgate to go ahead and order more "Games" films, sans Katniss; they'll no doubt make money, but will they make fans happy?

It's a lot to consider, and we hope that filmmakers think long and hard before diving into treacherous spin-off waters. Or at least come up with a damn good script.

In the meantime, get your Katniss fix while you still can. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" is due out on November 21.
