Ryan Murphy will freak people out for the foreseeable future: The "American Horror Story" creator has just inked a deal to make a new horror-comedy hybrid anthology series for Fox, set to debut next fall.
Murphy, along with "Glee" co-creator Brad Falchuck and "Glee" writer Ian Brennan, has received a straight-to-series order from the network for "Scream Queens," which Murphy has described as blending the lines between two distinct genres. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first season will be comprised of 15 hour-long episodes, "revolving around a college campus that's rocked by a series of murders."
Like its predecessor, "American Horror Story," the "Scream Queens" setting and characters will change from season to season. Each season is expected to focus on two female leads, though Vulture reports that it's unclear if "Queens" will also take a cue from "AHS" and recycle the same actresses in different roles.
"I knew I wanted to work with Brad and Ian again on something comedic, and we are having a blast writing 'Scream Queens,'" Murphy said in a statement. "We hope to create a whole new genre - comedy-horror - and the idea is for every season to revolve around two female leads. We've already begun a nationwide search for those women, as well as 10 other supporting roles."
While comedy-horror isn't exactly a brand new concept ("Shaun of the Dead," "Drag Me to Hell," "Army of Darkness," and "Slither" come to mind, among others), the idea fits Murphy's expertise to a T. And with "Glee" signing off after this coming season, Fox execs said they were eager to snag the showrunner for another project.
"One of our top priorities at the network has been to get Ryan Murphy to create a new series for Fox," said Fox TV Group chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman in a statement. "We loved every element of the pitch for this show - the genre-bending concept, which blends true horror with big comedic moments; the diverse and unforgettable characters and reuniting the phenomenal creative team that delivered 'Glee.'"
Murphy, Falchuck, Brennan, and Dante Di Loreto will executive produce "Scream Queens." Expect it to hit Fox sometime during the fall 2015 TV season.
