What's Worth Watching This Week: 'Snowpiercer,' 'Life After Beth,' 'Pee-wee's Playhouse'

New on DVD and Blu-ray



"La dolce vita"

Even if you snagged "La dolce vita" on Blu-ray when it was available via Kino Lorber, you'll still want to upgrade to this fancy Criterion edition. This new release received the 4K digital restoration treatment, and the extras include an interview with writer/director (and AD for "La dolce vita") Lina Wertmüller, an audio interview with star Marcello Mastroianni, and more.



"Life After Beth"

This is a kooky zombie love story about a guy named Zach (Dane DeHaan) whose girlfriend Beth (Aubrey Plaza) returns from the dead. In addition to the whole interpersonal love mishegoss of dating someone who's a rotting zombie, there's also a whole zombie apocalypse to deal with - can their relationship survive? Can they survive?!



"Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Complete Series"

The secret word is "Finally!" All 45 episodes and the Christmas special have gotten a fancy makeover, and there are tons of interviews and extras about the making of the show, from the puppets to the music. Eight discs of Pee-wee goodness! Ah!



"Snowpiercer"

The future looks anything but bright in this dystopian thriller from Bong Joon-ho. The only people left on Earth are living on a train that circles the Earth, with its own ecosystems and classes - and a coming class war. The two-disc Blu-ray comes with audio commentary from your favorite film critics, featurettes about the original "Snowpiercer" series, and interviews with Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton.



TV Worth Watching



"The Affair" (Showtime, Sundays at 10 P.M. EST)

Noah Solloway (Dominic West, "The Wire") is a writer and teacher who has an affair with a Montauk waitress named Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson, "Luther"), but there's more to this story than meets the eye. Both Alison and Noah give their versions on how the affair unfurled as a detective is questioning them separately. What happened? Why? What's the crime at the center of it all? If you haven't gotten hooked on this Showtime drama yet, you can watch the series premiere online now.





"Jane the Virgin" (CW, Mondays at 9 P.M. EST)

Gina Rodriguez stars as Jane, a virgin who's accidentally artificially inseminated during a routine Pap smear. Wow, talk about a lawsuit waiting to happen! To add insult to injury, the donor is Jane's old high school crush Rafael (Justin Baldoni). And he's married. Despite this kooky premise, fans and critics are digging "Jane" and its breakout star. You only have to catch up on one episode, so get moving.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" (October 22)

Get ready for "Mockingjay: Part 1" by brushing up on your "Hunger Games" history. Come for the creative ways people die in the Arena, stick around for Katniss's fabulous outfits. Or vice versa.



"Django Unchained" (October 25)

Now you can watch Quentin Tarantino's crazy Western from the comfort of your living room!



"Shivers" (October 1)

David Cronenberg's creepfest has been available for a couple of weeks now, but it's perfect to get you in the Halloween mood. Body horror at its finest!

"Listen Up Philip" (VOD, iTunes)

This dark comedy stars Jason Schwartzman as a loathsome young novelist anticipating the publication of his second novel, with Elisabeth Moss as his long-suffering girlfriend and Jonathan Pryce as Philip's equally self-obsessed idol/mentor. Writer/director Alex Ross Perry switches neatly between Philip and Ashley's points of view as their relationship implodes.





"How to Train Your Dragon 2" (iTunes)

Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon Toothless stumble upon Bewilderbeast, the dragon of all dragons -- as well as a mysterious dragon rider named Valka (Cate Blanchett), who might have some pertinent information about Hiccup's past. Djimon Hounsou voices the bloodthirsty dragon hunter Drago, who's gathering his fire-breathing forces for an all-out war. It's not nearly as charming as the first, but it's still worth a look-see.



"Housebound" (iTunes)

This New Zealand flick has won over genre fans with its winning gross-out humor. Morgana O'Reilly co-stars as a young woman named Kylie who, after a failed bank robbery, is placed under house arrest and forced to move back in with her mom, Miriam (Rima Te Wiata). Miriam thinks the house is haunted, but Kylie thinks her mum is nuts. At first, anyway.
