Benedict Cumberbatch To Play 'Doctor Strange'

Marvel finally has its "Doctor Strange" with the announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch will play the master magician in an upcoming film.

The "Sherlock" star will play a neurosurgeon who is drawn into a world of mystic arts following a car accident, the company said in a Thursday news release.

He'll play the character in a 2016 film directed by "Sinister" helmer Scott Derrickson and penned by "Prometheus" co-writer Jon Spaihts.

"Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity," producer Kevin Feige said in a statement.

"In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."

Doctor Strange plays a key role in the Marvel canon.

In the comic book series "The Infinity Gauntlet," he helps to marshal the forces of Earth to take on the wicked Titan Thanos, who has obtained total control over the universe with a glove containing six "Infinity Gems."

Early on in the comic, Strange is visited by the Silver Surfer to warn him that Thanos is coming.

Thanos appeared in 2012's "The Avengers" and last summer's "Guardians of the Galaxy."

Joaquin Phoenix had been in talks to play Strange but they never panned out, Deadline reported in October.

"Doctor Strange" is coming out as part of what Marvel Studios calls "Phase 3" of its superhero lineup, alongside titles such as "Captain America: Civil War," "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" and the two-part film "Avengers: Infinity War."
