As the Oscar race heats up, "Birdman" flew away with one big prize last night. Alejandro Iñárritu's film won the top prize at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, over nominees leader "Boyhood." The films are among the frontrunners in this year's awards season ("Boyhood" triumphed at the New York Film Critics Circle).
The surrealistic tale also netted a prize for star Michael Keaton, who plays a washed-up actor trying to make a comeback in a stage play. Upon accepting the award, Iñárritu joked, "I guess that this award will just help move forward the conversations that Michael Keaton and I are having with Marvel Studios to make 'Birdman 4.'"
The ceremony was hosted by Uma Thurman, and presenters included Meryl Streep, Jon Hamm, Scarlett Johansson, and Ethan Hawke. Here is the full winners list:
