Universal's live action adaptation of beloved 1980s cartoon "Jem and the Holograms" finally has a release date: The flick will hit theaters on October 23, 2015.
"Jem" focused on Jerrica Benton, and musical alter ego, Jem. While the series was totally '80s, this new version will be a modern take; according to Variety, "The musical fantasy reimagines Jem amid the current hyperlinked social media era in a story of a small-town girl going from underground video sensation to global superstar with her three sisters."
"Nashville" star Aubrey Peeples is playing the titular star, while Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, and Hayley Kiyoko round out the rest of Jem's band, the Holograms. Ryan Guzman will play Rio, a love interest for Jem, and Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis are also part of the cast.
John M. Chu is directing, from a script by Ryan Landels. Jason Blum ("Paranormal Activity," "Whiplash") is producing.
