A new trailer for "Unbroken," Angelina Jolie's sweeping period piece about Olympic track star and WWII POW Louis Zamperini, offers audiences a closer glimpse and the young man's struggle to survive in a Japanese war camp -- and how he uses his boyhood experiences to fuel his will to live.
Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) grew up with an older brother who pushed him to do his best at all costs out on the track.
"If you take it, you can make it," the elder boy urges his younger brother, a lesson an older Zamperini soon finds himself remembering as his fighter plane is downed in enemy waters, and he struggles to stay afloat for close to 50 days.
Those are just the beginning of the young man's struggles, as he's then captured by Japanese forces and thrust into a brutal war camp. He remains there for more than two years, with an officer who makes his life hell, encouraging other prisoners to hit him repeatedly and telling Zamperini, "You're nothing."
"If I can take it, I can make it," Zamperini tells himself, willing himself to make it through the experience alive. Though audiences know how this particular story ends, it's sure to be a harrowing journey to Zamperini's happy ending.
"Unbroken" opens on Christmas Day.
