'Star Wars' Rumor Report: Obi-Wan Kenobi May Star in Three Standalone Movies

Star Wars AnniversaryObi-Wan Kenobi may finally be getting his star moment.

The popular "Star Wars" character has always been an important figure in all six movies, whether he was the young, swashbuckling teacher of Anakin Skywalker or the venerable guiding hand to Luke. Now comes a rumor from Cinelinx that Kenobi will step up from being just a mentor to being the star of the show.

A source told the site that Lucasfilm is "currently developing a trilogy of films centered around the iconic Jedi." These could be among the standalone films announced by the studio, two of which will be directed by Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla") and Josh Trank ("Chronicle").

Previous rumors indicated that the standalone movies would focus on Boba Fett, Yoda, and/or Han Solo - and this may still be the case.

As for these purported Obi-Wan Kenobi films, here's what Cinelinx's source had to say about them:

  • It's not a trilogy, which a connected storyline: "They aren't part of a story arc but 3 separate Obi-Wan adventures set between Episodes III and IV."

  • One of the movies is "set completely on Tatooine and two where Obi-Wan travels elsewhere in the Galaxy.

  • "Qui-Gon Jinn is very much present in these stories. So too is Owen Lars." (We take this to mean Qui-Gon's Force ghost.)

An Obi-Wan standalone movie(s) would make a lot of sense, considering that "Star Wars: Episode VII" and the new trilogy takes place some 30 years after the events of "Return of the Jedi." Obi-Wan's standalones could take place in that intervening time, which could tie in to both animated series, "Star Wars: Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels."

Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan in episodes 1-3, could return to reprise the role. The actor has said he'd be "up for it" and even speculated himself that a spin-off could take place on Tatooine.

"I don't know what he did in the desert," McGregor told MTV. "We could make up some stuff."

Again, these are all just rumors, but making up some stuff about Obi-Wan Kenobi? We're up for that.
