You have to go from convincingly nasty to convincingly nice, with convincingly terrified along the way. And while everyone is rooting for your conversion, the character is a lot more fun when he's dispensing bile and insulting wisecracks. Plus, there are the ghosts of Scrooges past, from TV and film, that everyone remembers and will measure you against.
Still, Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" is elastic enough to accommodate all kinds of Scrooges -- bitter and bemused, male and female, live-action, and animated. Here is an alphabetical list of 17 of the diverse Scrooges who've made an impression on the big or small screen.
