'Avengers: Age of Ultron': Joss Whedon Taking Inspiration From 'The Godfather: Part II'

What do mobsters and superheroes have in common? Not much, but that's not stopping Joss Whedon from looking to the former group for some inspiration for the latter.

In an interview with AlloCine.fr, Whedon revealed that in making "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the follow-up to 2012's massively popular "The Avengers," the director is taking cues from an unlikely source: "The Godfather: Part II."

Explaining that events in "Iron Man 3," "Thor: The Dark World," and the upcoming "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," directly tie in with the plot of "Age of Ultron," Whedon acknowledged that many Marvel fans may not see all three of those films before watching the "Avengers" sequel. How, then, does he handle inserting source material from those three films without confusing those who aren't familiar with them? For help in answering that question, he's turning to the Corleone family.

"The model I'm always trying to build from, or my guiding star, is 'The Godfather: Part II,' where a ton has happened in between and it's a very different movie [from 'The Godfather: Part I'], but you don't need any information," Whedon told the site. "It's there in the film about what's happened since, what's different, and why is this a different film; why is it a different kind of structure, and why is it darker. It's all there, you're in the vernacular of the first movie and you're just ready to pick up in this new place, and hopefully that's what will happen with my movie."

As for aspiring to imitate a movie that's earned critical adoration and major Academy Awards bling, Whedon admitted his goal was a bit lofty.

"Obviously, I'm talking about one of the greatest films ever made," he said of "The Godfather: Part II." "I hope mine will be good."

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" hits theaters May 1, 2015.
