Throughout the day, Fox and Empire magazine will unveil what we can only presume is the entire slate of characters from their forthcoming, unnecessarily convoluted superhero epic "X-Men: Days of Future Past." A total of 25 different covers to a new issue of the magazine will be revealed throughout the day (so keep coming back, please), each featuring a different mutant superhero. This is going to get wacky!
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" features a twisty-turny plot that involves both time travel and alternate dimensions, not to mention the casts from the original "X-Men" trilogy (which began with Bryan Singer's original 2000 film) and the younger, sexier cast of 2011's swinging sixties entry "X-Men: First Class." That means that both Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy will be playing the same character in the same movie at different points in the space/time continuum. Should be pretty easy to figure out, especially if you have a PhD in astrophysics. Which we do.
The covers thus far have been both inspiring (Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique is still a foxy, visually striking baddie) and somewhat confounding ("American Horror Story's" Evan Peters as a purple-haired Quicksilver is pretty uninspired). Then there's the cover that features one of the mutant-hunting robots known as the Sentinels -- is it us, or is this design totally silly? Why is the chest cavity a big exhaust port? Also, these robots are supposed to be designed in the past. Shouldn't there be a retro '70s vibe, like '80s Robot from "The Muppets" (or the robot Rocky gave Paulie in "Rocky IV")?
Anyway, look for the rest of the cast (which includes Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellan, Ellen Page, Hugh Jackman and Omary Sy, amongst many, many others) to be revealed as the day trudges along. The film, which is based in part on the comic book story arc by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, will be in theaters on May 23, 2014, in eye-popping 3D.
