Proving that family-friendly animated flicks are always a safe box office bet, "The Nut Job" easily cruised to a big opening weekend earlier this month. Now, the squirrel-starring heist movie is getting a sequel.

"The Nut Job 2" is set to hit theaters on January 15, 2016. Though it's unclear how much of the original voice cast will return, the sequel will most definitely feature the first film's star, Will Arnett. Other actors who lent their voices to the flick include Brendan Fraser, Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl, Maya Rudolph, Jeff Dunham, Gabriel Iglesias.

"The Nut Job" was produced by an independent animation studio, and the executives behind it said they were thrilled with the movie's success. ComingSoon reports that the film enjoyed the biggest opening weekend ever for an independent animated feature, raking in more than $25 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

"We're thrilled that audiences have embraced these characters and it is exciting to anticipate their return for another adventure in 'The Nut Job 2,'" said "Nut Job" producer Mike Karz. "The entire team behind this movie did a fantastic job and we're looking forward to working with them again."
