Veteran Hollywood producer Tom Rothman just started a new production company, and has big plans for his first feature: a drama based on the life of tightrope walker Philippe Petit, directed by Robert Zemeckis and featuring dazzling 3-D sequences.
Deadline reports that Rothman, founder of TriStar Productions, was inspired to take on the project after seeing the impressive 3D sequences in Alfonso Cuaron's Oscar-nominated "Gravity," and wondering what story he could tell using similar technology. Zemeckis, who Rothman worked with previously on films including "Cast Away" and "What Lies Beneath," has reportedly been interested in telling Petit's story for some time, making his pairing with Rothman for the feature a no-brainer.
Petit has already been the subject of a movie about his life, the 2008 documentary "Man on Wire," which detailed his amazing tightrope walk between the Twin Towers on August 7, 1974. Rothman and Zemeckis's movie will also tell that story, a dramatized version to be based on Petit's memoir ("To Reach the Clouds," which is also the working title of the movie), climaxing with Petit's 45-minute walk. The first two acts of the film will detail how Petit and his crew planned and pulled off the illegal, incredibly dangerous stunt.
Twitch reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will take the lead in the film, though there's been no official word on the news from his camp. Expect lots of updates on this ambitious-sounding project as they become available.
