When Warner Bros. shifted "Batman vs. Superman" (or whatever it's going to end up being called) from a primo summer 2015 slot to a more manageable summer 2016 position, it moved an even more interesting project into its place -- "Pan," a fantastical retelling of J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" by "Hanna" and "Anna Karenina" filmmaker Joe Wright. While much of the cast has yet to be finalized (with Hugh Jackman and Javier Bardem in the running to play Blackbeard), one key piece of the casting puzzle has been wedged forcibly into place -- they have found their Captain Hook!
Garrett Hedlund, who most recently played a minor but memorable role in the Coens' wonderful "Inside Lewyn Davis," has been tasked with the job of bringing Captain Hook to life for Wright and company, according to a report on Deadline. Hedlund also starred in "Tron Legacy" and was really great in the otherwise lousy "On the Road." Supposedly he beat out both Jack Huston (from "Boardwalk Empire") and Ezra Miller (from "Perks of Being a Wallflower") for the role. Hedlund almost always rocks some kind of pirate-y facial hair, so he's already halfway there!
According to the same Deadline report, in the script, by Jason Fuchs, "an orphan is taken to the magical world of Neverland, where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against evil pirates." Sounds good to us! Also, it's in 3D!
If you're not on the Joe Wright train, time to get on it now. The filmmaker is easily one of the most accomplished and imaginative visual stylists working today, and everything from "Atonement" to "Hanna" to "Anna Karenina" bears his distinctive stamp. We cannot wait to see what he's going to do with this story -- and with this budget. It's going to be unbelievable.
