J.J. Abrams was criticized last year for his desire to keep secret the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's villain in "Star Trek Into Darkness," a ploy he acknowledges went over poorly, and one he doesn't really want to repeat for the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII." But, as a recent interview with the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph proves, the director can't help what his employees do to help preserve the mystery around his upcoming foray into the "Star Wars" universe.
While discussing his career with the Daily Telegraph in an interview posted this weekend, Abrams paused to remark on an odd happening in his office.
"Are you kidding me? My god," the director interjected. " ... I'm working on the 'Star Wars' script today and the people in my office have covered up all my windows with black paper. I guess they wanted to make sure no one could see what I was doing. ... It seems rather extreme."
Indeed, it sounds like the folks at Bad Robot maybe have too much time on their hands (which is odd, considering how busy Abrams's production company has been lately). Abrams told the Telegraph that compared to the fan base of "Star Trek," "Wars" is "in every way, a different animal," something he planned to take into consideration while deciding just how much information to reveal about the first chapter in the beloved franchise's new trilogy. Still, it wouldn't be Abrams if there wasn't some mystique involved.
"It's always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I've been used to, so I'm sure there'll be some sort of compromise," Abrams said. "But it feels to me like there's a purity in not knowing every little thing."
We'll see just how much Abrams is willing to budge in the coming months. In the meantime, we've got a long wait ahead of us to see the final product.
"Star Wars: Episode VII" opens December 18, 2015.
