'RoboCop' Preview: Meet the Future of Law Enforcement (EXCLUSIVE)

Robocop- Introducing Robocop

Up until now, the exact look and feel of next month's "RoboCop" reboot have remained elusive, obscured mostly by a series of phony ads for the movie's fictitious corporation, OCP, and commercials that showcased the movie's updated whiz-bang effects more than the (half) human drama at the story's core. Well, this exclusive featurette from the movie will give you a better idea about the world the new filmmakers have created -- and, more importantly, the man burdened with wearing that sleek art deco suit, "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman.

Kinnaman describes that Alex Murphy, in human form, is a great cop, but when he becomes RoboCop he is "the best cop who ever lived." Jose Padilha, the brilliant Brazilian behind the "Elite Squad" movies, says that he was looking for an actor to handle the "existential drama" of a character faced with "losing his humanity." Now, anyone familiar with the original film, and the thoughts of that film's director, Paul Verhoeven, know that this re-imagining is being fashioned as the exact opposite of the original, since that film was all about a robot discovering his humanity (and not the other way around).

The other thing that becomes very striking, especially in this behind-the-scenes footage, is how much Kinnaman duplicates, physically, the original "RoboCop" actor Peter Weller. They're both slender men with angular features who fit snugly inside a costume that might be a living hell to have to wear every day. Not that it affected Kinnaman personally: costars Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton make comments in this featurette about what a sweetheart Kinnaman is, even if he is playing the future's most deadly robotic killing machine. What a softie!

"RoboCop," which also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, and Jay Baruchel, opens February 12.
