What's up with "Insurgent"?
First comes news that "Divergent" director Neil Burger won't be returning for the sequel because of the tight production schedule, and now they're bringing on Oscar-winning writer/director Akiva Goldsman to take a turn spiffing up the script.
Goldsman won an Oscar for his script for adapted screenplay of "A Beautiful Mind," and his next film is an adaptation of the incredible time-traveling novel "A Winter's Tale." Last May, it was announced that Brian Duffield ("Jane Got a Gun") was writing the script for "Insurgent," but apparently Goldsman is taking a second pass at it. This is pretty normal in Hollywood, so it's probably not a big deal.
However, filming is supposed to begin this spring, not too long after "Divergent" opens in March -- it's so cold outside now that it's hard to believe spring is right around the corner, but it is! Which means these "Divergent" peeps need to get a new director on board ASAP. But let's not forget that "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" absolutely benefited from having a new director. (#sorrynotsorry, Gary Ross.)
Still and all, we're hoping that "Divergent" breaks the trend of disappointing YA adaptations. It's a fun series to read, and Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller are a dynamic duo. Teller totally wowed Sundance audiences with his performance in "Whiplash," which won several awards and was snagged by Sony Pictures Classics for distribution.
We'll be rooting for these crazy cats when "Insurgent" opens March 20, 2015. And, in the meantime, "Divergent" opens on March 21, 2014.
