"The Grand Budapest Hotel," the newest film from Wes Anderson, the American director behind the twee wind-up worlds of "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Moonrise Kingdom," is on virtually everyone's list of must-see 2014 movies. The trailer, released late last year, was brimming with so much wacky Wes Anderson-i-ness that it was impossible to resist -- Ralph Fiennes mugging, sets that look like they could double for elaborate, oversized dollhouses, a story that takes place in three timelines with three separate aspect ratios to designate them? Even the most hardened Anderson hater had to fall for some of that stuff.
Well, after this first clip from the film (courtesy of Apple Trailers), it's going to be even tougher to resist. This thing looks good.
In the clip, which runs just over a minute look, we get our first look at the introduction of young Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the young "Lobby Boy" at the Grand Budapest Hotel, who is being given an impromptu interview by Ralph Fiennes's M. Gustave H., the hotel's swarthy concierge. By all indications, this friendship will form the backbone of the film, so it's kind of amazing that Anderson and company are giving away what could be a pretty pivotal moment. Still, it's pretty hilarious.
Gustave is grilling him intently while walking through the lobby. It's zippy and funny and full of Anderson-y camera moves and the actively gorgeous score by Alexandre Desplat. In fact, the whole movie looks sumptuous to a ridiculous degree. Anderson's movies are often wonderful look but there's a kind of velveteen richness to the images that is downright intoxicating. At the end of this minute long clip, there's a chance you'll be high off the fumes.
The movie, which also stars (amongst others) Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Jude Law, Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Lea Seydoux, and Jason Schwartzman, has its world premiere opening the Berlin Film Festival on February 6 before opening wide on March 7.
