John le Carre (real name: David John Moore Cornwell), is one of the most celebrated authors of the modern thriller, and yet one of the most sparsely adapted. Most notable for the British television adaptations of his Smiley series, in terms of big event movies, the adaptations are few and far between. Sure, there was the wonderful "Constant Gardner" with Ralph Fiennes and the elegant, enigmatic "Tinker Tailor Solider Spy" with Gary Oldman, but for a man whose work is so voluminous (and so deeply cinematic), it's a shame that more of his works have yet to be plumbed. Thankfully, there is a new adaptation on the way and it looks like a corker. Take a look at the new international trailer for further evidence, you old spy you (courtesy of Coming Soon).
"A Most Wanted Man" is based on le Carre's 2008 novel of the same name and stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as some kind of crazy German spy hunting down some other spy (Grigoriy Dobrygin, giving off a kind of Tom Hardy vibe) who has escaped German intelligence's grasp. Like most le Carre joints, there seem to be an incredible amount of characters (played by the likes of Robin Wright, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and 2013 MVP Daniel Bruhl) and a whole bunch of shadowy espionage, perpetrated largely by dapper men in cleanly pressed suits.
The movie is directed by the wonderful Anton Corbijn, whose last film, the deeply under-appreciated "The American," seemed at least partially inspired by le Carre (or the le Carre works that ran on British television); not only is a persistent mood established in the trailer but it also conveys the author's sense of dread and melancholia. Most of le Carre's books are about men who make complicated international maneuvers while also being painfully insecure. So, so great.
While the movie will make its debut at the Sundance Film Festival later this month, stateside distributors Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have yet to solidify a domestic release date. They're just as slippery as the spies in the movie!
