William Hurt will play Gregg Allman in an upcoming biopic of the southern rock singer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hurt is set to star as the present-day Allman in "Midnight Rider," an adaptation of the rocker's memoir, "My Cross to Bear." The film will focus on two stories: the rise of the younger Allman's success with The Allman Brothers Band and his wild rock-and-roll lifestyle, and his realization at age 64 that he must get clean and sober in order to survive.

Hurt joins the previously-cast Tyson Ritter, the lead singer of pop rockers The All-American Rejects, who'll play the debaucherous younger Allman. Wyatt Russell will play Duane Allman, Gregg Allman's brother and bandmate, who died in a motorcycle accident shortly after the group released its third album.

Ritter and Wyatt will perform vocals, guitar, piano, and organ in the film, rerecording classic Allman Brothers tracks like "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider." The movie will also use original Allman Brothers recordings. No word on whether Hurt will also perform in the film.

"Midnight Rider" is directed by Randall Miller ("CBGB"), who co-wrote the film with Jody Savin. Production is expected to begin next month in Savannah, Georgia.
