Joe Wright's upcoming Peter Pan origin story, "Pan," has been touted as a revised history of the beloved characters first introduced in J.M. Barrie's novel, and that includes a new villain terrorizing Peter's world. Now, Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first images from the film that reveal Hugh Jackman's nefarious character.
Jackman is playing the pirate Blackbeard, who pilots a flying pirate ship and kidnaps orphans during wartime. One of those little tykes is Peter (newcomer Levi Miller).
In the images, we see Blackbeard's namesake -- more of a pointy goatee than the bushy beard we were expecting -- and his intense, feather-coated armor. (He also has a pretty odd-looking hairline, but we're hoping that that's just an awkward styling gaffe, and not a film-long problem with Jackman's wig.) There's also a shot of his ship, as well as a look at the wide-eyed young Peter.
According to EW, "Pan" also introduces Captain Hook (Garret Hedlund), who's been reimagined in the flick as "a dashing Indiana Jones-like figure" who has yet to earn the "captain" title (or have his hand replaced by a hook).
"This isn't exactly the Neverland story you know," Wright told EW of the flick.
Check out two of the images below, and head over to EW for the rest. "Pan" is due in theaters on July 17, 2015.
