What once sounded like a promising project is now in even more trouble: Studio Sony has put the Aaron Sorkin-penned Steve Jobs biopic in turnaround, effectively ending its relationship with the film.
The flick, to be based on Walter Isaacson's bestselling biography of the late Apple co-founder, has already gone through its fair share of upheaval recently, losing star Christian Bale and original director David Fincher. And while current director Danny Boyle has been scrambling to replace Bale after the actor abruptly left the production earlier this month, it seems that all that trouble was just too much for Sony, which decided to part ways with the project this week.
One silver lining for this development, though, is that since Sony is abandoning the project, another studio is free to pick it up, and it looks like there's already heavy interest from at least one party. Deadline reports that Universal is currently hammering out a deal to secure the film, and has already given it a green light, meaning that there shouldn't be too big of blip in the production schedule.
Of course, that all hinges on Boyle and co. finding a replacement leading man. Michael Fassbender is reportedly the current frontrunner for the part. Seth Rogen, meanwhile, had been previously rumored to have been courted for the part of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, while Jessica Chastain was also rumored to be in the running for an undisclosed role.
It seems that something changes with this production just about every week, so stay tuned -- this likely won't be the last we hear about the film's behind-the-scenes drama.
