After some recent speculation, it's now official: Michelle MacLaren will direct the "Wonder Woman" movie.
MacLaren, known for her work on television shows such as "Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones," and "The Walking Dead," had been in the running for the job for some time, but only recently became the frontrunner after talks over the summer fizzled, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The trade adds that MacLaren was reportedly vying for the post alongside fellow female directors Jennifer Kent (horror flick "The Babadook") and Lesli Linka Glatter ("Homeland").
Studio Warner Bros. specifically sought a woman to helm the film, THR writes, a nod to the female empowerment message of the "Wonder Woman" comics. A woman has never directed a tentpole superhero flick -- Patty Jenkins came the closest after signing on to helm Marvel's "Thor: The Dark World," but eventually left the film -- and the team behind "Wonder Woman" was reportedly eager to change that fact.
There's no word yet on when the standalone "Wonder Woman" film will begin production -- Gal Gadot will introduce her version of the character in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in 2016 -- but MacLaren could also potentially be in the mix to direct a second flick featuring the hero sometime down the line. In the meantime, "Wonder Woman" is slated for release on June 23, 2017.
