'So You Think You Can Dance' Renewed for Season 12 -- With a New Twist

Long-running Fox reality competition series "So You Think You Can Dance" will live to pirouette once again, as the network has picked up the show for a 12th season.

With the renewal comes a fresh twist for the venerable series: dancers will be divided into two different groups, and compete head-to-head throughout the season. The groups will be stage dancers, who perform more traditional genres of dance including ballet, contemporary, jazz, and tap; and street dancers, who are skilled in animation, hip-hop, and breaking.

Judges and an All-Star mentor will whittle down hopeful contestants into the top 10 dancers on each team, and the 20 finalists will compete during live shows for audience votes. One dancer from each team will be eliminated each week, until the finale, when a single dancer will be declared the winner.

"'So You Think You Can Dance' is a rare jewel," said Simon Andreae, exec vice president of alternative entertainment for Fox, in a statement announcing the renewal. "It's produced and consumed with tremendous passion and it's developed one of the most deservedly loyal followings in all of unscripted television. We are immensely proud to be returning it to the schedule with a thrilling new twist that will bring it up to date and introduce a whole new set of rooting opportunities."

"The competition is going to be much more exciting for viewers and even more demanding for the dancers," added Nigel Lythgoe, a co-creator, executive producer, and judge on "SYTYCD." "Dancers from different genres have always been competitive with each other and we've found a great way to harness that to bring out the absolute best performances in the best dancers across the country."

Season 12 of "So You Think You Can Dance" is slated to premiere sometime during summer 2015.
