At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"22 Jump Street"
Can Chris Miller and Phil Lord make anything entertaining? When "21 Jump Street" the movie was announced, it seemed utterly ludicrous, if not downright insulting. Yet here we are enjoying the sequel, digging on the continued doofy adventures of Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum). What's next, a dazzling movie about Legos?!
"20,000 Days on Earth"
This documentary about writer and musician Nick Cave is just as weird and wonderful as its subject. It's a must-see for fans of Cave's oeuvre, but even if you don't know a Boy Next Door from a Bad Seed, you'll get a kick out of this strange film. Featuring appearances by Kylie Minogue, Ray Winstone, Warren Ellis, and Blixa Bargeld.
"The Wind Rises"
Master animator Hayao Miyazaki's tribute to Jiro Horikoshi, one of the engineers behind two of Japan's most effective fighter planes from WWII, received critical acclaim from all corners, including an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. This Blu-ray/DVD release comes with both the original Japanese feature with English subtitles, and an English language dub featuring actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, and more.
TV Worth Watching
"Jane the Virgin" (CW, Monday at 9 P.M. EST)
Have you started watching this sweet, clever, and funny telenovela-style dramedy? You should be! Gina Rodriguez stars as Jane, who was accidentally artificially inseminated in a terrible OBGYN mix-up -- the irony, of course, is that she's still a virgin, partially because of her grandmother's ominous warnings and partially because she didn't want to end up like her single mom Xiomara (Andrea Navedo). There's lots of juicy drama involving a whole host of people, like her fiancé Michael (Brett Dier), gorgeous hotelier and accidental inseminator (and Jane's old crush) Rafael (Justin Baldoni), and Rafael's wife Petra (Yael Grobglas).
"Scandal" (ABC, Thursday at 9 P.M. EST)
It's the winter finale. There's always so much double- and triple-crossing and red wine and meaningful eye contact and awesome outfits packed into each episode that it's nearly impossible to stand, but we trust that Shonda Rhimes et al will manage to make this episode even more over the top than usual.
"State of Affairs" (NBC, Monday at 10 P.M. EST)
This is the series premiere of Katherine Heigl's government drama. Heigl plays Charleston Tucker, the CIA analyst who does the President's Daily Briefing on the top threats to the United States. The legendary Alfre Woodard plays the Prez, which is reason enough to check it out despite the very mixed reviews. Plus, Joe Carnahan directed the pilot.
New on Netflix
"Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats"
If you dig Chelsea Peretti's comedy chops on "The Kroll Show," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," or even just Twitter, tune in to her stand-up special.
"La Bare"
Joe Manganiello of "True Blood" and "Magic Mike" fame makes his directorial debut with this documentary about a male strip club in Dallas, TX. Yup!
"Xena: Warrior Princess"
It's chilly outside, which means you need a new show to watch obsessively. Right? Right. Lucy Lawless stars as a warrior in ancient Greece who travels around kicking the collective butt of baddies, with help from her BFF Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor). Plus, the awesome Zoe Bell got her start as Lucy's stunt double. All six seasons of mythical goodness are now streaming!
New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only
"Bad Turn Worse" (iTunes)
Jeremy Allen White, Logan Huffman, and Mackenzie Davis star as Texan teens who end up owing a lot of money to increasingly bad characters in this on-demand crime thriller.
"Laura" (Amazon Instant)
Otto Preminger's noir stars Dana Andrews as a detective who falls in love with the woman whose murder he's investigating. Gene Tierney co-stars as Laura, with Vincent Price as her scummy fiancé, Clifton Webb as Laura's mentor, and Judith Anderson as her aunt. This twisty thriller is free for Amazon Prime subscribers.
"Only Lovers Left Alive" (iTunes)
If you haven't seen Jim Jarmusch's super cool vampire film with Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton, it's now available for a mere 99 cents to rent on iTunes. 99 cents! That's less than what you pay for your morning Starbucks run.
