Guillermo del Toro Says DC Is Building a Cinematic Universe, Just Like Marvel

While Disney and Marvel are charging full steam ahead with their ambitious plans for a shared Marvel Cinematic Universe (which will now include elaborate television projects airing on both network TV and Netflix), it still seems like Warner Bros. and DC are inching forward slowly in terms of building their own big-screen continuity. Still, in 2015, Superman and Batman will face off in a "Man of Steel" sequel that's rumored to feature both Wonder Woman and The Flash, and now, based on comments made by monster-loving madman Guillermo del Toro, they might be further along than we think.

While talking to Cinefilos.it (via Coming Soon), del Toro said plans for his own DC project, entitled "Justice League Dark" and featuring a bunch of the more monstrous characters in the comics' line-up, including Deadman, Swamp Thing, and a very British John Constantine (previously brought to life by the very American Keanu Reeves in "Constantine"), is currently waiting to be slotted into the company's larger plan.

"We're still on ['Justice League Dark'], writing, and hopefully it will happen but there are no developments that are new. We're still at Warner Bros., they are making plans for the entire DC universe," del Toro explained. "All the superheroes, all the mythologies, and part of that is 'Justice League Dark.' They're planning on TV, movies, and all the media, so we have to fit into that plan."

This obviously comes as something of a shock, considering the DC output thus far has been slapdash at best and far from interconnected -- a bleak Batman trilogy here, a "Green Lantern" one-off there, "Arrow" on The CW -- for del Toro to acknowledge that not only is there a grand scheme but that his film is waiting to fit into it, is very close to mind-blowing.

Of all the DC projects, "Justice League Dark," especially under the leadership of Guillermo del Toro, whose "Pacific Rim" remains the highpoint for big studio blockbusters this year, sounds the most exciting. We can't wait for Warner Bros. and DC to get their ducks in a row, if only because it will mean seeing "Justice League Dark" sooner rather than later.
