It's been an excellent year for movies, and for their directors. It must have been hard for the Directors Guild of America to pick just five nominees for the best feature film, but somehow they managed just fine.
The DGA nominated Martin Scorsese for "The Wolf of Wall Street," Paul Greengrass for "Captain Phillips," David O. Russell for "American Hustle," Steve McQueen for "12 Years a Slave," and Alfonso Cuaron for "Gravity." All of the different guilds -- actors, producers, writers, directors, etc. -- pick the cream of the crop in their field, and sometimes there's overlap.
It seems the one movie the guilds can all agree on is "12 Years a Slave," which received nominations by the Producers Guild and SAG, which gave four actors nominations. "12 Years" was ineligible for WGA consideration, not overlooked.
It's interesting to note, however, that in a year jam-packed with legendary directors, the Coen brothers, Woody Allen, and Alexander Payne were left off the roster. "Inside Llewyn Davis" has ranked high on many critics' lists this year, with plenty of buzz for leading man Oscar Isaac. Whether that will carry over to the Oscars has yet to be seen.
