"Interstellar," Christopher Nolan's sprawling tale of a group of explorers (led by good ol' boy astronaut Matthew McConaughey), is nothing if not ambitious. It's a movie shot mostly in IMAX, that tackles thematically heady issues like relativity and the boundaries of time and space, all within the fairly marketable package of a big budget sci-fi movie. Or, as he says in our exclusive preview, "When you're dealing with the vastness of the universe, it's going to have to be the most ambitious film you've done."
How ambitious, you ask?
Well, as you can see in this roughly one-minute-long documentary about the behind-the-scenes challenges of "Interstellar" (opening Friday), Nolan recreated far-flung, wholly made up planets (some covered in snow, others in water) in a way that made the actors feel like everything was really happening. Sure, there are computer-generated images present within "Interstellar," but the majority of things were created live on set, something that the actors (including Anne Hathaway and John Lithgow) found both helpful and also unprecedented. This included everything from a terrestrial dust storm to the snowy landscape of a distant moon.
If you weren't already excited enough about "Interstellar," Nolan's hotly anticipated follow-up to his critically beloved and audience-adored Dark Knight trilogy, then this little doc should pretty much do the trick.
"Interstellar" opens on Friday in this galaxy and the next.
