A stage adaptation of "The Princess Bride" is no longer inconceivable: Disney is developing the beloved classic for the theater.
Variety reports that the production is being spearheaded by Disney studio chief Alan Horn, who became involved with the 1987 film during his tenure at Castle Rock Entertainment. The project is still in its infancy -- there are currently no casting or timeline announcements -- so it's unclear whether it will be a play or a musical.
This staging is completely separate from a failed musical adaptation that was in the works several years ago. That production was scuttled after a rights dispute between "The Princess Bride" author William Goldman -- who also adapted his book for the big screen -- and composer Adam Guettel ("The Light in the Piazza").
Goldman will work alongside Disney Theatrical Productions on the new adaptation.
"My involvement in The Princess Bride goes back to 1987 and it has always been close to my heart," said Horn. "For all those years and a few more, I've been friends with the brilliant Bill Goldman, and to now have a stage production of this film in development at Disney is honestly a dream come true."
"What William Goldman created is first and foremost a celebration of storytelling," said Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions, in a statement. "[W]hat better place to spin that tale than on the stage?"
