Leonardo DiCaprio is an avid supporter of environmental causes, and spends much of his spare time traveling the globe, assisting NGOs with tasks such as studying endangered animals. But one too-close encounter with a great white shark has spooked the actor from future interactions with the deadly underwater predator.
In an interview on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," DiCaprio recounted that his "huge fear of sharks" began after an incident on the 2006 set of "Blood Diamond."
"I actually got stuck in a cage with a great white, which was awesome," the actor told an incredulous DeGeneres, adding that even he wasn't sure how he survived the encounter. He went on to describe the fluke incident:
The tuna kind of got stuck on the top of the cage, and the great white leapt out and tried to bite it, and it went into the cage with me. And half of its body was in and out and I'm flatted down at the bottom. It was this far away and it chomped a few times, but I survived it.
We're glad Leo made it out unscathed. Here's hoping he plays it safe during his next exotic animal adventure. [h/t HuffPost Entertainment]
