Nominees for the 45th annual NAACP Image Awards, described by the NAACP as "the nation's premier multi-cultural awards show," were announced Thursday, with "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and "12 Years a Slave" leading the motion picture nominations.
"The Butler" received eight nominations, the highest of any nominee this year, scoring nods for Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor, three for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actress, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing. "12 Years a Slave" received six nominations: Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor, two for Outstanding Supporting Actress, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing.
The rest of the Outstanding Motion Picture nominees were "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," "Fruitvale Station," and "Best Man Holiday." Each of those films also snagged multiple nominations.
According to the event website, the Image Awards honor "the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts ... as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors." A full list of film nominees can be found here.
