A Robot Is Born in the 'Chappie' Trailer

ChappieThere are tons of movies depicting the struggle of man vs. machine, but Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie" looks at it from a different angle - man raising machine.

Entertainment Weekly has the new trailer for the movie, from the director of "District 9" and "Elysium," which follows the education of the titular robot. His creator (Dev Patel) and his friends take on the task of raising Chappie, a gentle and naive machine (played in motion-capture by Sharlto Copley). He's like a child; he has to learn everything.

Patel's character wants Chappie to have "original thoughts" and to paint and write poetry. But others - like Hugh Jackman - are wary. "The problem with Artificial Intelligence is it's way too unpredictable," Jackman says.

The tone is very much a coming-of-age story, except that the kid is a robot. The trailer alludes to darker moments, but "Chappie" seems more sentimental and heartwarming than Blomkamp's previous films.

"Chappie" opens March 6, 2015.
