Both Variety and Deadline are reporting that Fassbender ("X-Men: Days of Future Past," "12 Years a Slave," "Shame") is in talks for the high-profile part, after Bale's abrupt departure left a gaping hole in the movie's cast. Both outlets caution that negotiations are still in the early stages, and with all the behind-the-scenes turmoil that this flick has faced so far, nothing should be taken as a done deal just yet.
Bale had been announced as the lead in "Jobs," based on Walter Isaacson's bestselling biography of the Apple co-founder, less than two weeks ago, when he suddenly pulled out of the production on Monday. While writer Aaron Sorkin had touted him as the perfect choice for the part -- and David Fincher, who was initially attached to direct before Danny Boyle stepped in, had been eyeing the actor as his lead from the beginning -- Bale reportedly felt that the film was not the right fit for him, and bowed out.
While sources reported that the production was in a mad scramble to replace its lead, Boyle already had been slated to meet with other actors this week in Los Angeles to fill out the rest of the ensemble. While it's unclear how Fassbender's name entered the mix, it's possible that he was also on Boyle's shortlist for the Jobs role, and after Bale bailed, he sought out the Brit for the part.
Leonardo DiCaprio had also reportedly been in the running for the part, though he passed on the project. Seth Rogen is also allegedly being eyed for the role of Steve Wozniak, while Jessica Chastain is rumored to be joining the cast in an unspecified part.
However the negotiations started, we hope that Fassbender's tentative involvement becomes definitive, and "Jobs" can get back on track soon. This production has seen enough trouble already.
