BAFTA Awards Nominations 2014: 'Gravity' Leads With 11 Noms

bafta nominations 2014

The BAFTA Awards nominations have been unveiled, and they've quite grave! As in "Gravity," you see, which snagged no less than 11 nominations -- that includes best film, outstanding British film, best director, and best original screenplay.

"12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" are hot on "Gravity"'s heels with 10 nominations each, with Paul Greengrass's "Captain Phillips" bringing up the rear for nine noms. A few films that have been overlooked by the different U.S. guilds and groups got BAFTA love, like "Philomena," which is up for best film, outstanding British film, adapted screenplay, and leading actress. Judi Dench is an Oscar favorite for her performance as Philomena Lee, but "Philomena" isn't high on many Oscar prognosticators' lists.

Plenty of familiar names pepper the list of nominations, like "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Saving Mr. Banks," and "The Act of Killing," but it also gives some attention to movies that have gotten lost in the shuffle, like "Rush." Fans of small and gritty British indies will do well to check out "The Selfish Giant," from writer/director Clio Barnard, which is nominated for outstanding British film.

The BAFTAs also nominated Matt Damon for his role in "Behind the Candelabra," which aired on HBO earlier this year. The Liberace biopic also snagged a nominated for production design (all those rhinestones!), costume design (ditto!), make-up and hair (Rob Lowe's face!), and adapted screenplay.
