The cover of Entertainment Weekly is giving us the willies -- in a good way."Gone Girl" director David Fincher snapped a doozy of a portrait of Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in character as Nick and Amy Flynn for the mag's feature story on the adaptation of Gillian Flynn's page-turner. It's an appropriately creepy take on Annie Leibovitz's unforgettable portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono for the cover of "Rolling Stone," which shows the former Beatle nude, wrapped around his fully clothed wife.
In the cover photo for EW (below), Affleck is cuddled up with a corpse-like Pike, who's wearing a silky dress and a toe tag. If you've already read Flynn's thriller -- and we suggest you do! -- you know that by the time we meet the couple, their marriage has gone pretty far afield. In fact, Amy's gone missing on their fifth wedding anniversary, foul play is suspected, and all fingers are pointing towards Nick.
Then again, Fincher and Flynn have promised their own take on the source material. Flynn adapted her own novel for the script, and sounds like she wasn't too precious about killing her darlings. "There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I'd spent about two years painstakingly putting together with all its eight million LEGO pieces and take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie," she told "EW."
Meanwhile, Fincher allowed that "we may have been too beholden to the source material" ins his adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," an equally cold-blooded thriller based on Stieg Larsson's novel. "Dragon Tattoo" didn't particularly wow viewers, but our attention is piqued when it comes to this "Gone Girl."
"Gone Girl" hits theaters October 3.
