Randy Jackson announced yesterday that he is leaving "American Idol" after 13 seasons as a judge and mentor. The former musician and producer has been with the Fox reality competition from the start.
"After 13 seasons, I felt now was the perfect time to leave 'American Idol,,'" he said in a statement to Deadline. "I'm proud to have been a part of a series that discovered some incredible artists and will go down in history as one of the most successful television shows ever. A true original, Idol started it all. Onto what's next."
Jackson first tried to leave "Idol" in 2013, after season 12 ended. It was a tumultuous time for the once-juggernaut program - Jackson's fellows judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey departed, leaving only Keith Urban on the panel. "Idol" invited Jackson back as a mentor, to replace Jimmy Iovine, and he accepted.
But now, with the show in a more stable place - Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick, Jr. are all returning as judges -Jackson has handed in his notice again. This leaves only host Ryan Seacrest as an original cast member.
As for what's next for Jackson? He'll concentrate on managing artists for his Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment company, as well as producing music and television projects. And as "Idol" producers said in a statement, the door is always open for the Dawg to drop by.
