NEW YORK (AP) - "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" outmuscled a trio of new films, as the science fiction sequel topped the box office for the second-straight week with an estimated $36 million.
According to studio estimates Sunday, "Planet of the Apes" easily bested the horror thriller "The Purge: Anarchy." Universal's low-budget sequel to last year's surprise hit, "The Purge," opened with $28.4 million.
In third place is Disney's "Planes: Fire & Rescue," the animated sequel to 2013's "Planes." It made $18 million.
The Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz R-rated comedy "Sex Tape" failed to turn on moviegoers. The Sony Pictures release opened in fourth place with $15 million.
