From Bon Temps to Hell's Kitchen: "True Blood" star Deborah Ann Woll, easily the cutest vampire on the HBO series, has signed on for a prominent role in Netflix and Marvel's new "Daredevil" series. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Woll will play Karen Page, who is Matt Murdock's love interest and a prominent character in the comic books (the character appeared in the very first issue!) Sounds good to us.
The cast for Netflix's 13-episode "Daredevil" series seems to be shaping up nicely: "Boardwalk Empire" star Charlie Cox will star as Matt Murdock, the blind attorney who, by night, stalks Hell's Kitchen as a masked vigilante known as Daredevil. In the past few weeks Elden Henson, who has signed to play Murdock's best friend and legal partner Franklin "Froggy" Nelson, while Vincent D'Onofrio has agreed to essay the villainous Kingpin, have joined Cox. (Rosario Dawson is also a part of the cast, but her role is so mysterious that we have to assume it's a boldly re-imagined Elektra.) The show is set to premiere sometime next year.
Like some other Marvel projects of late, "Daredevil" has had its fair share of creative problems. Originally the series was to be primarily written by and executive produced by Drew Goddard, a Joss Whedon confederate and comic book super-fan. But when it looked like Goddard's "Sinister Six" movie was gaining steam at Sony, he switched over to the "Amazing Spider-Man" spin-off, having written only the first two episodes. While Goddard still retains an executive producer credit, he left the show-running duties to another Whedon alum: Steven S. DeKnight.
While it will be some time before we understand whether or not these behind-the-scenes factors will affect the finished product, the wonderful cast that's in place and the richness of the source material has us cautiously optimistic. Woll was one of the bright spots of "True Blood," even when it was really sucky (pun intended), and we can't wait to see her continued adventures -- in the sunlight, no less!
